K01  Margaret Wylde, President & CEO, ProMatura Group, LLC


Margaret Wylde, Ph.D., founded ProMatura Group, LLC in 1984. She was recently installed as chair of the Urban Land Institute’s Senior Housing Council, she serves on the board of directors of the American Seniors Housing Association, and she formerly served on the boards of the American Society on Aging, National Association of Senior Living Industries and Seniors Housing Council of the National Association of Home Builders. She is frequently invited to speak at conferences and programs throughout the United States and Canada.

Margaret is a faculty member at the Erickson School at the University of Maryland in the Executive Development program for the age-qualified housing industry. She has been a faculty member since the program’s inception in 1999 by Johns Hopkins University/National Investment Center for the Seniors Housing and Care Industry.

The author of five books and dozens of technical papers and articles, Margaret is also a contributor to trade and business publications and scholarly journals. Her publications include Right House, Right Place, Right Time: the Community and Lifestyle Preferences of the 45+ Housing Market (BuilderBooks, 2008); Boomers on the Horizon: Housing Preferences of the 55+ Home Buyer ( BuilderBooks, 2002); and Building for a Lifetime: The Design and Construction of Fully Accessible Homes (The Taunton Press, 1994).

Margaret is often sought out for her expertise by various news and trade publications, including the Chicago Tribune, Overseas Property Professional magazine, Senior Housing News and

In 2007 she received the Icon of the Industry Award from the 50+ Housing Council of the National Association of Home Builders for her “substantial and lasting impact on the seniors housing industry.”

Providing meaningful and productive environments for individuals as they age is not the function of one organization, initiative, or facility. Truly effective environments for aging are the result of initiatives that are driven by the community at large through engagement of individuals at all levels. This dynamic panel of individuals will share real success stories of how communities within towns, cities, and regions have successfully addressed how to provide services, support and a successful lifestyles for their aging citizens. Attendees will hear about the rebuild of a community following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, a visionary and strategic regional approach in Florida, and case studies from across the U.S.—all demonstrating that “community up” is an approach that satisfies the needs of not only a community’s older population but everyone.


About the Speakers

Dodd Kattman, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Partner, Morrison Kattman Menze, Inc., Architecture Planning Interiors

Dodd Kattman is a founding partner of Morrison Kattman Menze, Inc., an architecture, planning, and interior design firm with more than 25 years of senior living and care project experience. In his role as senior living managing partner, Kattman dedicates time to design, research, publish, and present topics that elevate the expectations of supportive environments that promote the process of aging with dignity in community. Dodd currently chairs the Design for Aging Review task force, a biennial collaboration between LeadingAge and the AIA, which conducts the national juried design awards and post-occupancy evaluation programs promoting innovative design in environments for older adults. Additionally, Dodd serves on the AIA Design for Aging Knowledge Community advisory group.



D. Scott Crabtree, President and CEO, Broadway Services, Inc., Lambeth House
D. Scott Crabtree is the Chief Executive Officer and President of Broadway Services, Inc. (BSI). Since November 1, 2003, BSI has been the operator of Lambeth House, Inc., a premier continuing care retirement community (CCRC) located in New Orleans, and operator of St. Anna’s Residence, a non-profit nursing home founded in 1850. Crabtree assisted in the development of another CCRC in the metropolitan New Orleans area and served as the Executive Director of a non-profit senior living service provider from 1992 until 2003. From 1982 until 1992, his career was dedicated to healthcare administration in the specialty hospital sector. He is an active member of LeadingAge, currently serving on the Public Policy Congress Steering Committee and is the Chair of the Educational Committee. He serves on the board of Gulf States LeadingAge. He is a board member for the Louisiana Board of Examiners of Nursing Facility Administrators and the Louisiana Emergency Preparedness Review Committee. Crabtree currently serves as the Vice President of Bridge House, a New Orleans charity dedicated to substance abuse recovery. He was appointed to the 2009–2011 American Institute of Architecture/Design for Aging jury. He has served as a director on numerous non-profit boards and advisory committees. He has been an invited speaker at various national conferences related to both the senior living industry and the impact of disasters on senior living.


Thomas M. Esselman, President and CEO, Institute for the Ages
Tom has spent the past 22 years working for Hallmark Cards, Inc., in Kansas City, Missouri, including five years with Hallmark International in the UK. Combining a business management background with a flair for creative product development and the retail marketplace, Tom has led a number of breakthrough initiatives at Hallmark, most notably the creation of song cards and the recordable greetings business. He drove innovation and growth initiatives through partner relationships with the MIT Media Lab, the Institute for the Future, and multiple open innovation practitioners. Tom earned a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University and a Master in Management from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. Throughout the years, Tom has been active in many charitable organizations. With his Italian heritage (from his mother’s side) driving his interest in cooking, he has donated countless homemade pizzas and biscotti to support schools and social causes.

K03 Closing Keynote Luncheon
AARP State Offices—Champions for Your Work in Every State and Local Communities


Nancy McPherson, State Director, AARP Louisiana 

Since 2007, Nancy McPherson has served as AARP’s State Director in Louisiana.  Nancy leads a team of lobbyists, advocates and volunteers in advancing reforms at the state and federal level in healthcare, financial security, and livable communities on behalf of the nearly 500,000 AARP members who live in Louisiana.  

As AARP State Director, Nancy has established resident project teams to implement AARP’s principles for affordable and accessible housing, mobility and transportation options, and national best practices in healthcare and public safety. One partnership with Hollygrove, a New Orleans neighborhood that was devastated in the aftermath of Katrina by flood waters, violent crime and a lack of critical services, received one of ten national awards (out of 700 nominees) from the MetLife Foundation for its impact on older adult well-being and a 72% reduction in violent crime.

Prior to AARP, Nancy established a twenty year track record of improving performance and accountability in police departments and local government using evidence-based practices.
