NIH funds nursing home study
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has announced a new research project that will focus on the use of video-based chronic care education in nursing homes.
Brown University in Providence, RI, will lead the nursing home study, which will evaluate the role of video education in the care-planning process used by residents, family members and healthcare providers for residents with multiple chronic illnesses.
Videos will be tested and evaluated based on their effectiveness in helping residents and staff make difficult decisions such as resuscitation and the use of ventilators in the last stages of an illness.
Brown will partner with two large long-term care systems—Genesis and UHS-Pruitt—for the study. The NIH's National Institute on Aging and the National Institute of Nursing Research will provide oversight.
The study will be one of three NIH projects funded through grants totaling $19.4 million that will address the growing number of Americans living with multiple chronic medical conditions. Recent estimates indicate that three in four adults aged more than 65 years have at least two chronic conditions.
