National pharmacy reaches milestone

Plano, Tex.-based AlixaRx has announced that it is now servicing over 100 post-acute care facilities with its on-site medication dispensing systems.

The milestone establishes this national pharmacy as an industry leader in delivering fully-automated, onsite medication dispensing systems to such facilities. It also has become the first post-acute care pharmacy with a national footprint capable of offering post-acute care providers an onsite medication dispensing and management system that gives clinicians access to more than 300 of the most commonly prescribed medications. In less than a year, AlixaRX has dispensed more than six million doses of medication to over 20,000 patients and residents.

The company claims that its individually-sealed and patient-specific packaging has proven to reduce medication errors—a problem well documented in the heathcare industry — and that because only those medications needed for one day are dispensed, facilities are able realize an overall reduction in drug costs.

In celebrating the reaching of this milestone, Brad Savage, AlixaRx's senior vice president, said, "For too long, our industry has struggled with the medication delivery systems used in post-acute healthcare settings. While many smaller, regional pharmacies have embraced technology to improve patient care, the national pharmacies have been reluctant to change because of their large infrastructure investment to support the traditional punch-card dispensing model."
