Decisions of care made between patients/residents and their doctors ideally occur during face-to-face encounters. But too often the information delivered is complex, hard to understand and presented in writing to be reviewed by the patient when not in the presence of his or her physician.
In a study published in the British Medical Journal , researchers at McMaster University have developed what they call the SHARE-IT decision aid that presents summarized medical information in a simple format at the point-of-care using tablets or computers.
According to lead author Thomas Agoritsas, doctors tend to overwhelm patients with too much information instead of using that information to begin a discussion focusing on the care decisions that are most important to the patient right at the point-of-care.
