ADMINISTRATORS’ COMMENTS

Ingrid Weaver, vice-president of operations, Porter Hills Presbyterian Villages: “Cook Valley Estates is a sister community to our original campus, which is a CCRC offering residential living, assisted living, specialized dementia care, as well as a health and rehab center; average age there is 84. The new campus is residential, but we provide many services-including private-duty nursing, home healthcare and rehabilitation-to enable residents to age in place for as long as possible.

“The market is active seniors, average age 78, who desire a more private living environment in larger spaces. They continue to be involved in social and recreational activities outside Cook Valley, just as they were before moving here. Some have seasonal homes elsewhere, as well. By coming here, they have the security of being a part of the Porter Hills complete continuum of care while still maintaining a very strong sense of personal space, privacy and independence.

The carefree lifestyle is also attractive. Residents are free to enjoy themselves without the concern of home maintenance and upkeep.

“The single-family homes tend to be attractive to couples, while the apartments attract those individuals who are looking for more social interaction and the convenience of having all the amenities close by and under one roof. Altogether, it has proven to be a successful approach to the active, older-adult market.”

Debbie Steggles, director, Cook Valley Estates: “We offer a variety of amenities: 24-hour security, building and grounds maintenance, life-enrichment opportunities, a cafT and ready access to personal and healthcare services.

“As for the design, the most striking thing to me is that there is so much natural light. There are no gloomy interiors; it’s all very bright and airy.”
