Celebrate National Nursing Home Week

Mother’s Day kicks off National Nursing Home Week (May 12 through May 18) is an opportunity to honor and recognize those who live and work in skilled nursing and post-acute settings. Across the country, facilities large and small have made their plans, received proclamations and prepared to let everyone know what they do and who they serve.

This year’s theme is Team Care. That slogan demonstrates that the best resident outcomes are not achieved by individuals, but by a group that works together to meet its mission. From the top administration to clinical and operational services staff, everyone plays a role in a resident’s life.

It’s not too late to plan events in your facilities: Host a resident tea and invite family members, organize a cookout for volunteers, have some children entertain, invite local leaders to visit so they can see the great job your skilled nursing center does. The list is limited only by your imagination.

If time is running short and you haven’t planned anything yet, how about a movie night? Serve hot popcorn, traditional movie candy (Goobers, Raisinettes, Junior Mints, Sno Caps) or other matinee confections? I Remember Mama is one nostalgic title that comes to mind, and it’s probably available at your local library. It’s a movie from 1948 and I’m sure today’s resident population would still enjoy it. (Of course, in 10 years, Monster-in-Law might be a better-remembered title! )

If you to want to check out some other ideas, the American Health Care Association (AHCA) offers an array of suggestions and materials that you can incorporate into your planning.

It’s never too late to celebrate. Have a great week!
