3 ways to fight the flu

Vaccination, preventive action and, in some cases, antiviral medications are the three-pronged approach to fighting the flu recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

"First and foremost is to get a vaccine," CDC Director Tom Frieden, MD, MPH, shared at a recent press conference. "Everyone six months and over, now is a great time to get vaccinated.

"Second…take everyday preventive action," Frieden continued. "That means, stay home if you’re sick. If you’re sick, stay away from other people. Have good hygiene, like washing your hands often and covering coughs and sneezes.

"And finally, if you do have symptoms of flu, particularly if you have an underlying condition and your doctor prescribes antiviral medicines, take them," Frieden said. "They’re a good second line of defense against flu."

The CDC has posted flu vaccination information for healthcare professionals on its website.
