The most expensive states for care

New research from LTCG reveals the most expensive states for care in nursing homes and assisted living communities and from home healthcare providers.

• Nursing homes: Daily private and semi-private room rates are highest in Alaska ($466 and $474, respectively), followed by Connecticut ($453 and $421). Massachusetts, Washington, DC, New York, New Jersey, Hawaii, Vermont, North Dakota and California round out the top 10 list. The U.S. average is $267 for a private room and $233 for a semi-private room.
• Assisted living: The highest average monthly rate for one-bedroom accommodations is in Washington, DC, at $8,127, followed by New Jersey ($6,196) and Alaska ($6,037). Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, New York, Delaware and Hawaii round out the top 10. The U.S. average is $4,245. LTCG’s Cost of Care Study also includes data for two-bedroom accommodations.
• Home healthcare: Home health in Iowa averages the highest hourly rate in the country, $30, followed by North Dakota at $29/hour. Minnesota, Wyoming, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Alaska, Colorado, California and Hawaii round out the top 10 list. LTCG’s Cost of Care Study also includes data for registered nurses and licensed practical nurses providing home healthcare.

The annual Cost of Care study from LTCG, a provider of administrative and clinical services to the long-term care insurance industry, includes data from 8,500 nursing homes, 12,500 assisted living communities and 13,000 home health providers from 150 metropolitan statistical areas and non-metropolitan regions across the country. This year’s study also includes data from 600 adult day care providers in California, Florida, Illinois, Minnesota, New York, Texas and Washington. Minimum, maximum and averge private pay information is included for each type of provider.
