Socks for Seniors: A holiday campaign

So you have cold feet in bed? Isn’t it nice to warm them up in a fuzzy pair of socks? Well, many seniors with circulatory issues have cold feet, too, not only in bed but all day long. Wouldn’t it be great to ensure that all the residents in your community, the elderly living at home and homeless seniors could have winter foot protection, too?

Socks for Seniors is an annual nationwide holiday drive to warm the feet—and hearts—of older people who might be alone or far from loved ones this holiday season. Residents of nursing homes and assisted living communities also benefit from the drive. Since the project’s beginnings in 2002, the program has grown to more than 500 participating cities nationwide.

Socks can be funny, trendy and with or without holiday motifs. The more non-traditional the socks are, the better. Residents enjoy the fun that colorful socks bring to their lives. “We’re just old, not dead, and we still have a sense of humor,” one recipient is quoted on the organization’s website as she selected a pair of brightly colored, striped toe socks. While focusing on finding fun patterns, don't forget that tube and gripper socks are appreciated, too.

Your organization can also participate by decorating a collection box and placing it where residents, friends and families can see it. Mention the drive in your newsletter or activities calendar.

To register as a collection site or to be considered for distribution for your residents, visit the Socks for Seniors website. It’s a fun and rewarding way to participate in the season of giving.
