Proposed CMS rule would require health information exchange for LTC
In tandem with the White House Conference on Aging this week, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has proposed a rule that would require nursing homes and long-term care (LTC) facilities to participate in health information exchange (HIE), according to HealthITAnalytics.
HIE allows healthcare professionals to access and share a patient's medical record electronically, states healthit.gov.
Use of an HIE would take place when a patient is transferred from one facility to another. Facility A would document the event in the patient's record, but then also transmit that information to Facility B to promote a continuity of care.
