Kudos to caregivers
On Monday, the nation celebrates the holiday that recognizes the people who built this country and made it great. No job is unimportant, although some contributions go largely unnoticed and are underappreciated.
In long-term care, Labor Day is an excellent opportunity for administrators and nurses to recognize the people who help you provide optimal care and enhance your organization’s reputation. This group of employees keeps your facility clean and its systems operating efficiently.
I would, however, like to single out the group of employees with whom residents and families have the closest relationship—certified nursing assistants (CNAs). They put a face to your organization. Families and residents count on them for care and caring.
A good CNA is a treasure. Whether bathing a resident, getting her or him dressed or simply spending a few minutes in conversation, a CNA strives to be upbeat. Their duties are many and difficult. It takes a special person to be a successful CNA.
Of course, the news is rampant with incidents of abuse, neglect and other negatives committed by aides. Those items get attention. The everyday heroics of a good caregiver do not cause a ripple. Take time this weekend to focus some positive attention on the backbone of resident care. You’ll make your CNAs’day.
