Improve depression symptoms with exercise

For residents with mild to moderate depression, studies find exercise could be key in helping alleviate symptoms. Read more on how to identify a resident with depression here. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, depression affects more than 6.5 million of the 35 million Americans over the age of 65.

So how do you engage someone with depression?

  • Encourage them to go outside and enjoy the surroundings
  • Hold aerobics classes. One study found aerobics classes were just as successful at reducing depression after 16 weeks as taking Zoloft. 
  • Go for walks. Another study found that walking daily for 35 minutes or for an hour three times a week reduced symptoms in those with mild to moderate depression.
