Long-term care dentistry: A growing field

Nearly 1.3 million long-term care (LTC) residents have a more difficult time accessing dental care than any other group in the nation, according to a release from the American Dental Association (ADA).  To meet the growing need for dentists to serve in LTC environments, the association is offering online training: “Dentistry in Long-Term Care: Creating Pathways to Success.

An eight-module, self-study online course covers LTC delivery models, regulatory/legal compliance and creating an oral health program. The course also shows how to deal with complex patients and to ensure that daily oral care is maintained.

Members of the ADA’s National Elder Care Advisory Committee present the course, which is worth 10 hours of continuing education credits.

The ADA’s goal is to train 1,000 dentists to provide care to nursing home residents by 2020.

Registration is available on the ADA website.
