Consistent nursing staff related to fewer rehospitalizations in SNFs

Researchers at the Brown University Center for Gerontology and Healthcare Research conducted a study to determine if fewer hospital readmissions affected  the turnover of licensed nurses in skilled nursing facilities.

In the study, published in the April issue of The Gerontologist, researchers accessed the Florida Nursing Home Staffing Reports and data from 681 Florida nursing homes to determine the relationships among the retention of licensed nurses, turnover and rehospitalization rates.

Findings indicate that nursing homes with a consistent staff of licensed nurses had a 2 percent lower rehospitalization rate. However, the study found no relationship between turnover and the 30-day rehospitalization rate.
