David LeVine, MD, CMD, Medical Director of Menorah Manor in St. Petersburg, Fla., has been named the 2016 Medical Director of the Year by the Foundation for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine, the foundation organization of AMDA–The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine.

Within the field of long-term care (LTC) medicine, LeVine has implemented countless programs over the years, including medical staff recruitment initiatives and staff education programs on dementia, end-of-life, palliative care and ethics. He has developed a clinical credentialing process, formed a team to provide assessments for changes in memory or behavior, and has even been known to lead Menorah Manor’s residents in a song or two.

LeVine has been around medicine his whole life—his father and two brothers were surgeons. He credits his involvement with AMDA for many of his accomplishments. He observed that he was a fairly novice practitioner when he first became a medical director, and tools such as the Core Curriculum on Medical Direction program and clinical practice guidelines “helped me to understand what it means to be a quality medical director and team leader,” notes the AMDA announcement.

The award program, established in 2007, honors LTC medical directors who serve as outstanding leaders and role models for physician involvement, teamwork and quality innovations in long-term care settings.
