$30 million in funding earmarked for falls prevention study

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) and the National Institute on Aging of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have partnered to meet the challenges of falls among the elderly. The two organizations have earmarked $30 million to fund a multiyear clinical trial targeting noninstitutionalized seniors.

Although the study is not aimed at fall prevention in the long-term care community, researchers have issued a request for information asking long-term caregivers, physicians, therapists and other clinicians to provide information to assist in developing this study.

“[The agreement] also provides a template for future collaborations with NIH and other funders to conduct comparative effectiveness studies that focus on the needs, concerns and questions more important to patients,” says PCORI Executive Director Joe Selby, MD, MPH.
