Trailer Park Nursing Homes

It never ceases to amaze me what you can learn from doing interviews. It’s one of the reasons I became a writer and editor. I’m curious about many things and where others glaze over at the nitty-gritty of an explanation, I’m all ears.

I interviewed Dave Kyllo, executive director of the NCAL for LTL’s May cover story on the future of assisted living. As assisted living evolves to meet changing consumer demands, all sorts of never-before-thought-of venues are coming into play. And why not? Just because a person is older doesn’t mean he or she wants to live in a cookie-cutter establishment that others decided is the place for them as they age. I was particularly intrigued when Dave mentioned that in Texas, assisted living facilities can be found in trailer parks! I think this is fabulous! Why shouldn’t elders who feel comfortable in a trailer park neighborhood have to move away from that environment just because they need a little help?

My news-nose is twitching on this one, and I’m anxious to find out more about it. You can bet you’ll be reading about this “out of the box” idea in an upcoming issue of LTL magazine. In fact, if you have any input on trailer park assisted living facilities, please e-mail me at
