Wireless monitor can reduce pressure ulcers

A presentation at this year's Medicine X Conference by Barrett Larson, MD, co-founder and chief medical officer of Pleasanton, Calif.-based Leaf Healthcare Inc., once again stressed the importance of preventing pressure ulcers.

Leaf has developed a wearable pressure ulcer monitor that monitors a patient/resident's position and movements and alerts nursing staff or caregivers when it's time for repositioning.

The Leaf system, which has been approved by the FDA, consists of a single-use, disposable sensor that is attached to the upper chest. Data collected by the monitor are sent wirelessly to a central monitoring station or a mobile device such as a tablet or smartphone. Caregivers can periodically check a person's position or recent movements and receive alerts based on that person's turning schedule.
