UpToDate adds sleep medicine

UpToDate, a clinical decision support resource published by Wolters Kluwer, has added sleep medicine as its 24th medical specialty. More than 80 sleep medicine specialists contributed to the content, which is a significant expansion of the core sleep topics in previous versions.

The new section includes clinical guidelines on 90 sleep-related topics, including the latest advancements in research on circadian rhythm disorders, sleep-related breathing issues, insomnia and sleep restlessness. Clinicians can access the diagnostic information, treatment protocols and peer-reviewed recommendations online or via mobile app.

Most older adults experience natural shifts in circadian rhythms that affect sleeping patterns, but many seniors also experience sleeping problems because of other illnesses and medications, notes the National Sleep Foundation.
