Genesis Rehab, Sensoria partner on smart wearables for seniors

Santa Clara, California-based Sensoria, a provider of smart garments and wearable technologies, is partnering with Genesis Rehab Services (GRS),  a subsidiary of Genesis HealthCare and a leading provider of physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, respiratory therapy and wellness services, primarily for older adults.

The partnership will leverage Genesis Rehab Services’ clinical knowledge and Sensoria’s smart wearables intellectual property and will be co-branded “Sensoria Health powered by Genesis Rehab Services.”  Specifically, the new company will leverage Sensoria’s technology platform which internally is referred to as Sensoria Core.  This non-mission specific microelectronic device can be used as a stand-alone wearable as well as connected to the new Sensoria smart sock v2.0 or Sensoria smart shoes for fall detection, prevention and rehabilitation scenarios.

Over 30 percent of people aged 65 and older fall each year. The goal of Sensoria Health is to accelerate the development of rehab and fall prevention and detection predictive analytics solutions. This data asset creation will be generated by the broad adoption of smart clothing and body sensors and address the aging population healthcare needs both at home as well as in assisted living and skilled nursing facilities.

“Sensoria Health will be developing solutions that help improve aging people’s lives.  We all recognize the need for smart wearable and tele-health solutions that are geared toward the elderly and see the health care vertical as very promising. We are thrilled to partner with Genesis Rehab Services, a leader in this industry, to provide the new company guidance and clinical validation to our new healthcare focused solutions,” said Davide Vigano, Co-Founder and CEO of Sensoria.

Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans.  Falls threaten seniors’ safety and independence as well as generate enormous economic and personal costs.  According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every 11 seconds, an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall; every 19 minutes, an older adult dies from a fall.

Sarah Thomas, head of global innovation for Genesis Rehab Services tells us, “According to the Population Reference Bureau, the number of Americans ages 65 and older is projected to more than double from 46 million today to over 98 million by 2060, and the 65-and-older age group’s share of the total population will rise to nearly 24 percent from 15 percent. GRS is excited to start building with Sensoria a new digital innovation engine to serve the needs of this large and underserved patient population.”

This is clearly a win-win situation for both parties and even more importantly for the patient.  GRS will provide clinical validation for smart garments and technologies in the rehab, activity monitoring and fall detection scenarios while leveraging the creation of new and innovative products focused on smart digital aging.  Sensoria provides innovation, knowledge, quality of care digital tools to support the new endeavor.  Together Sensoria Health aims to enable higher quality of care, improved clinical and operational outcomes in the post-acute care environment well as a broader reach to the home and community with a direct to consumer model.
