Residents were having breakfast in their Wyoming County Skilled Nursing Facility in Warsaw, N.Y., on Jan. 14 when they felt the building vibrate and heard a loud noise. Staff immediately moved residents from the second- and third-floor dining rooms.
The dining rooms are located over a recessed entrance. Windows and walls cracked. Inspection showed that a steel I-beam under the recess had deteriorated and cracked, according to the facility’s CEO, Don Eichenauer.
Because the nursing home had an emergency plan, there were no injuries. Residents were moved to other rooms of the three-story building or were transferred to other area facilities that cooperate in the nursing home’s evacuation plan.
After repairs were made and inspected, residents returned to the facility.
