REITs, acquisitions impact senior housing rankings list

Consolidation deals, financing opportunities and fresh investments played the largest roles in the 2013 Largest Senior Living Providers List, released by the Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA) this week.

The list, published in ALFA’s  Senior Living Executive, ranks the top 80 senior living providers by bed capacity as of Jan. 1, 2013, and also breaks the list down by speciality, including assisted living, independent living and memory care.

Capacity across all sectors of senior living rose to 514,000, 2 percent higher than last year. Several companies shifted positions, mainly due to mergers and acquisitions. For example, Genesis HealthCare’s acquisition of Sun Heathcare Group helped to push Genesis up to #36 this year.

Another hot sector is Alzheimer’s disease and memory care, where more companies are adding spaces for dedicated services.

If you’re not exactly sure what kind of care is needed, you might want to move to Seattle—the city is headquarters for companies within the top two of nearly every category in the list.
