Online tool teaches nurses best-practice skills

The University of Texas Medical Branch has developed a new online tool for nurses that focuses on helping caregivers learn evidence-based practice (EBP) skills while reducing the time spent in education sessions.

The Disciplined Clinical Inquiry—Evidence-Based Practice Literacy pathway is intended to help nurses find research information that is delivered in easy to understand formats so they can better focus on patient outcomes.

Using online modules, nurses can learn the necessary EBP skills in about three hours, rather than the 50 hours needed for standard DCI-EBP programs.

“Mainstreaming EBP to bedside nurses with differing levels of professional experience, education and generational profile is a challenge for nurses in professional development,” said Dolora Sanares-Carreon, EBP nursing program manager at the Univeristy of Texas Medical branch, in a press release. “There is a clear need for a simplified process for learning these skills in order to address the realities of patient care at the time of treatment.”

In addition to the online modules, a mobile app for nurses is being considered, she added.
