New garments resist pathogens

A new germ-resistant fabric that can reduce the spread of infections in hospitals or skilled nursing facilities is about to hit the U.S. market.

Orlando-Fla.-based Vestagen Technical Textiles Inc. announced that the myComfort line of apparel for seniors housing residents and hospital patients will be available this fall. This follows on the heels of the company's release this summer of its myGuardian brand of protective garments for healthcare workers.

The apparel products are made from Vestex, a fabric that is fluid repellant, breathable and has shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria.

Baptist Health in Jacksonville, Fla., already has adopted the myGuardian line of uniforms for its healthcare workers and will soon be attiring its patients with the myComfort line of garments. “Every healthcare organization encounters harmful, infection causing pathogens on a daily basis, and it’s a tough battle," said Diane Raines, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, senior vice president and chief nursing officer at Baptist Health. "There is no magic bullet that will eliminate all contaminants healthcare workers or patients come across, but it’s important to incorporate new technology like Vestex into infection prevention arsenals to help give us the upper hand in that fight.”
