New CPR requirements issued for nursing homes

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) prohibits nursing homes from instituting “no CPR” policies. In a January memo, CMS issued new training and certification guidance for obtaining and renewing CPR certification.

CPR training and information can be obtained online, but to receive certification or recertification, a skills demonstration and assessment are required, and those cannot be obtained online.

CMS advises staff already certified in CPR to have an instructor evaluate their skills to ensure their certification.
