Institute of Medicine is renamed

At its annual meeting, the membership of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) voted to change the name of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to National Academy of Medicine (NAM) effective July 1. The name change is part of an internal NAS reorganization “to more effectively integrate the work of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine,” according to a release.

IOM programs and activities such as research and reports will continue uninterrupted.

“This change recognizes the important achievements of medical and health researchers, clinicians and policymakers in improving health and medicine both nationally and globally,” said IOM President Victor J. Dzau, MD, who will become the first president of NAM.
