Home health, hospice M&As heat up

February is off to a roaring start for home health and hospice mergers and acquisitions, with nine separate deals in just one week—more than are typically seen in a month, according to healthcare market intelligence firm Irving Levin Associates.

Kindred Healthcare was the busiest of all, scooping up Samaritan Care Hospice of Osceola (Fla.) and HopeBridge Hospice in Solon, Ohio, for undisclosed amounts. Kindred also purchased nine home health offices in South Carolina for $18 million, bolstering its home health expansion in that state following its acquisition of Gentiva a year ago.

Home health and hospice provider Amedysis acquired Associated Home Care, a private-duty home healthcare agency headquartered in North Andover, Mass., for $28 million, adding it to its late 2015 acquisition of Infinity HomeCare, Sarasota, Fla.

Addus HomeCare bought South Shore Home Health Services, Long Island, N.Y., a personal care services agency deeply experienced in the state’s managed care for dual-eligibles and Medicaid beneficiaries.
