Happy National Senior Citizens Day!

Aug. 21 was designated as National Senior Citizens Day by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to recognize the value of America’s seniors and the important roles they play.

“We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older—places in which older people can participate to the fullest and can find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance, and services they need to continue to lead lives of independence and dignity,” Reagan stated in the official proclamation of the holiday.

The event provides many opportunities for communities to discuss senior issues, including safe independent living, dementia research, health reform and long-term care finances.

As a sign of the technology-based times, the holiday even has its own Facebook page.
