AMDA announces medical director of the year

Joshua Schor, MD, CMD, has been named the Foundation for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine’s 2017 Medical Director of the Year. He was presented with the award during the Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care (AMDA) annual conference.

“I was flabbergasted when I heard that I’d won this award,” Schor says in a press release. “It actually recognizes the hard work of everyone at our facility. We can all walk a little taller and prouder.”

Schor serves as Senior Medical Director at Optum Complex Care Management. Since 2001, he has also served as Medical Director at Daughters of Israel in West Orange, New Jersey.  Schor serves on the Membership Committee and is Past-President of the New Jersey Medical Directors Association.

He established an interdisciplinary wound team at Daughters of Israel in 2014 using new protocols and equipment as well as weekly visits from an external wound specialist liaison. The facility’s wound numbers declined and staff have seen dramatic improvement in the healing of complex wounds.

Daughters of Israel also participates in a training course to reduce catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI). The facility has achieved a 0 percent CAUTI rate. Schor played a leadership role in creating a separate Rehab Center at Daughters of Israel, which opened in 2009, anticipating the growing need for quality post-acute care.

Schor started the “Caring Conversations” program to get staff talking about ways to promote teamwork, communication and job satisfaction with support from a New Jersey Council for the Humanities grant.

He is the author of the book, “The Nursing Home Guide: A Doctor Reveals What You Need to Know About Long-Term Care.”
