EHR data predict diabetes risk

Burlington, Mass.-based Arcadia Healthcare Solutions collected data from insurance claims and lab results in electronic health records (EHR) from nearly 10 million people to create an infographic showing the progression and control of Type 2 diabetes.

With more than a decade’s worth of data to analyze, the company developed a predictive algorithm for this longitudinal study. As a result, it was able to identify a group of individuals at a high likelihood of receiving a diagnosis of diabetes in the coming years. Nearly half of those identified as high-risk (45 percent) received a diagnosis of diabetes the following year.

The company hopes that by using EHR data and its predictive algorithm to detect those at high risk, healthcare providers and care managers can take preventive measures long before an actual diagnosis is made, noted a company factsheet on the diabetes tracking program.
