CMS Admin Berwick resigns

President Obama nominated Berwick in April 2010 and then appointed him the following July while Congress was on summer recess. That recess appointment was set to expire on Dec. 31, 2011, and Berwick would have needed congressional confirmation to retain his post.

Earlier this year, Republican senators promised to block Berwick’s confirmation. The GOP has heavily criticized Berwick for his past remarks and praise of Britain’s National Health Service as a model for the United States to follow.

The White House announced that it will nominate Medicare Deputy Administrator Marilyn Tavenner as his replacement.
