Can voice analysis detect Parkinson’s disease?

New speech analysis software developed by Netherlands-based Good Vibrations Company BV can detect the changes in speech patterns that could signal the onset of certain illnesses such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease.

Developed by Paul Boersma, PhD, of the University of Amsterdam, the software uses algorithms that analyze voice characteristics and patterns, striving to detect changes in speech when they are still minor.

Additionally, the software's ability to measure other aspects of the voice, including pitch, intensity, resonance, dullness, phrasing and tempo, can help clinicians use speech patterns to detect neurological and muscular changes that are linked to chronic diseases.
