Four members of Congress have launched the Assisting Caregivers Today (ACT) Caucus to focus on issues related to family caregiving, and the American Health Care Association (AHCA) has become a charter member.
The bipartisan caucus was launched today on Capitol Hill by Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO), Rep. Diane Black (R-TN) and Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM); all are co-chairs of the group. The congressional caucus will focus on bringing greater attention to family caregiving and helping people live independently, educating Congress on these issues and engaging legislators on a bipartisan basis to help solve related issues.

“Providers are in a unique position to understand the value of family involvement in caregiving and the emotional and financial challenges families continually face,” Mark Parkinson, AHCA president and CEO, said in a statement. “Family caregiving does not stop at the front door of a care center, though its nature may change to being an advocate for the patient, participating in care planning and implementation, and being a social presence in the life of the resident or patient.”
AHCA member providers interact with family caregivers who may be using respite care services or who are involved with a loved one residing at a care center or in another setting. Professionals also sometimes support family members caring for those who have recovered from surgery in post-acute facilities or hospitals.
“By supporting family caregivers, all ACT Caucus members can positively affect care quality and quality of life for persons receiving care at home or in any healthcare setting,” according to AHCA.
