| Private and public spaces were carefully orchestrated to best meet the psychological and physical needs of the residents, and to foster different degrees of social gathering and privacy. The neighborhoods and households offer the opportunity for intimate gathering and a very homelike environment. The living and dining spaces are residentially scaled to feel like home. The fireplace anchors the household and serves as a focal point around which residents can gather. Freedom of choice, movement and destination, and the freedom to easily go outside to a secure courtyard, are all part of the essence of home at Brewster Village. With its town center, the facility provides a sense of community beyond one’s home and neighborhood. In addition to providing a homelike, nurturing, safe and secure environment, the building is designed to require fewer stafff, which is mandatory in this age of decreased availability of skilled caregivers. Reduced travel distances and a new wireless pager, with nurse-call paging and a phone, allow for greater coverage and more freedom for residents and staff. By sending a signal directly to the appropriate caregiver, the wireless nurse call saves staff the time of searching for the appropriate caregiver to attend to the resident’s needs. As a result, the households are much quieter, and residents who are normally agitated are now calm. |
